MADI

I woke to the sound of a bear roaring.

It wasn’t what I wanted to hear, not with a stiff back and muscles—from sleeping on the forge floor as well as from the hours of smithing—and not with a full-fledged hangover. Dwarven fire whiskey was no damn joke.

Tejón’s massive eye blotted out the sun that slanted through the vent in the forge wall. I have been calling to you with my mind and you wouldn’t answer! I had to use my louder voice. Will you wake up this day and hear about my adventures, or do you plan to sleep all day?

I’m up! I replied to the bear. I’m up, just chill out, okay?

It is a warm day. I don’t feel any chill at all.

I groaned, wanting to smack Tejón, but also feeling blood rush back into the arm I’d slept on. A riot of needles assaulted the limb and I clutched it to my chest.

Another roar erupted nearby. This one came from the hairy lump of dwarf who’d passed out near the anvil. “By the lords of the underworld! I need to piss!”

“Thanks for that. I needed to know that information, thank you so much.”

I rubbed my face for a time, reluctantly admitting to myself I was in no better condition than Wardahl. The morning was gone, the day close behind it. I needed to get my body back in working condition.

After half an hour of groaning, downing water, and stretching, I felt mostly human. A cup of black coffee in my hands, I sat down opposite the dwarf to discuss what we had both neglected to bring up since I’d first heard the light steel sing.

Wardahl sighed and took a swig of ale. It was the “best medicine,” he insisted. Slamming his empty mug down, he regarded me calmly. “For a human, and especially for an adventurer, you were a fine apprentice. I can’t say I won’t miss you, Madi. A pain in the ass and almost as stubborn as me, but you’re a good woman with a strong heart.”

“Thank you, Wardahl. I will miss you too, most of the time at least. It did feel like we fought almost as much as we worked, though.”

The dwarf laughed. “Wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Pushing away my sadness, I focused on the gleaming weapon that lay atop the anvil just a few feet away. “We sure as hell went out with a bang, though, yeah? I didn’t think it would be so…”

“So blighted powerful? Aye, I didn’t either. The combination of runes as well as the amount of light steel and the shape we chose all contributed to the overall piece. Even our moods, the effort we shared, and the fire whiskey: Everything becomes a factor when working with enchanted weapons of this quality.
